The state of cloud computing in 2022

One of the most important and influential technologies over the last few years has without a doubt been cloud computing. Poeta predicts that this technology is only going to continue to thrive, as more and more companies evolve to take advantage of the many improvements that the technology allows them. 

Let's take a look at the state of cloud computing in 2022. How has it grown over the years, how it's going to continue to evolve, and most importantly, how it can start helping your business today.

Where has it come from:

According to Tech Target (2021) cloud computing can be defined as, “a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the internet. These services are divided into three main categories or types of cloud computing: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS)”. Without going into too much detail, each one of these options is basically a level of just how much a cloud server is doing the work for you. SaaS for example is using the software through the cloud, like the design platforms Canva or Figma - and a platform as a service hosts an entire platform of tools, such as the Google suite, or Office 365. The technology has come such a long way since it was first introduced, and oftentimes you might not even know you are using cloud services. 

Where is it going:

It's safe to say that cloud computing is growing even larger. Pheonixmap.com reports that, “The total end-user spending on cloud services will be around $397.5 billion by the end of 2022. In 2021, this figure sat at around $332.3 billion” (2021).”

So where is all of this growth going? 

Edge computing:

Edge computing is a relatively new approach to processing data, in which operations do not take place within a data centre, but instead the computation and storage occur within localized devices directly at or near the network's edge. It may sound like this computing is some sort of substitute for cloud computing, but the two technologies actually complement each other quite well, and are a combination we are already seeing a lot of in 2022. Using both cloud and edge tech enables IT environments to have the benefits of the cloud and also provide for:

• Near-instant data processing.
• Little to no latency in response times.
• Lower bandwidth usage.
• Decreased volumes of transmitted data.

As more and more companies look to combine the cloud with edge devices to gain more efficiency, edge computing that is integrated with traditional cloud computing will be critical. 

More AI and ML:

Since AI and ML take in so much raw data, they require a huge amount of processing power and bandwidth, which is much more affordable by simply using the cloud rather than purchasing your own expensive servers and processors. As a result, these two technologies complement each other perfectly. AI helps cloud services manage data while gaining reliable insights into user behaviour, trends, likes and dislikes – and cloud tech makes AI more cost-effective and accessible. Cloud computing is also playing a major part in the development of two emerging AI techs:

Creative algorithms: These programs use machine learning to create anything from art to synthetic data. These algorithms are also able to train other AI programs.

Language modelling: Programs with increased accuracy to understand human languages, a tech projected to transform the way businesses interact with users.

Cloud computing will play a key role in delivering these services to users and providing the infrastructure for computer-hungry programs. The use of the cloud in AI is not just beneficial to large companies. Small and low-tech businesses will increasingly start to use cloud computing as a gateway to top-tier AI solutions.

Without the cloud, startups and companies with smaller budgets would not be able to work with advanced ML and AI functions. Luckily, businesses of all sizes and types can now develop AI/ML products thanks to cloud computing.

Kubernetes & Blockchain:

Blockchain is essentially a technology that provides a tamper-free digital ledger that can more easily record data without relying on a central authority. Blockchain is being set up to be quite the game-changer, but it unfortunately has some problems with scaling properly with big data storage and management. 

Kubernetes is an open-source system for automating deployments and scaling apps that helps rapidly scale a blockchain environment. K8s also ensures high availability with multiple containers running for a single critical service.

So, naturally these two technologies come together to help each other out, and companies will continue to push that envelope in 2022. Deploying blockchains and their components via cloud-native Kubernetes clusters may very well be the standard of adoption going forward as developers look to solve blockchain's complexity, integrations, and scaling concerns. A win/win if you ask us.
